August 15, 2010 – Vol.15 No.22 Orion Energy System Installs its First Urban Wind Turbine. Orion Energy Systems has raised the first urban wind tower in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, which will help offset energy consumed at the company’s technology center. Based on average wind speed, the 20-kilowatt wind turbine is expected to generate up to 32 megawatt-hours a year. The wind turbine was manufactured by Oshkosh, Wisconsin-based Renewegy. The turbine manufacturer uses a hydraulic tip-up, monopole tower-raising system where hydraulic cylinders mounted at the base raise the tower then are removed after the installation. The monopole tower is the first urban wind turbine in Manitowoc County. Urban wind is the process of generating electricity through wind power to be used at an adjacent load center in an urban setting, significantly reducing the inefficiencies of transmitting and distributing electricity generated in rural areas. “Like Orion’s growing suite of energy solutions, which now includes efficient lighting, wireless control systems and renewable solar technologies, urban wind will create permanent distributed load reductions — delivering capacity to the stressed energy grid and delivering energy savings to the end-user,” said Orion CEO Neal Verfuerth. Located within a half mile of the shores of Lake Michigan, the average wind speed at Orion’s tech center is 13 mph. The turbine will begin spinning and generating electricity in less than 7 mph wind. The wind turbine’s safety mechanisms prevent the three, 15-foot blades from exceeding 108 revolutions per minute, and automatically shut down the wind turbine in winds in excess of 56 mph.
Orion Energy Systems, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is a power technology enterprise that designs, manufactures and deploys energy management systems, consisting primarily of high-performance, energy-efficient lighting platforms, intelligent wireless control systems and direct renewable solar technology for commercial and industrial customers without compromising their operations. Renewegy, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin manufactures a 20kW wind turbine and monopole tower aimed at the light commercial market. (8/12/10)
