June 27, 2008 – Vol.13 No.14 Propel Biofuels Opens Downtown Seattle’s First Biodiesel Station. The company’s flagship Clean Fuel Point also uses environmentally-friendly standards for design, construction and operation. The station located in South lake Union at the corner of Westlake Avenue and Valley Street will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will sell B20 and B5 at a price competitive with petroleum diesel. Customers who open a CleanDrive account with Propel can get real time reporting of the volume of carbon emissions reduced by using biodiesel instead of petroleum diesel. Clean Drive graphically displays the positive impacts of biodiesel use across three areas: reductions in CO2, barrels of oil displaced and equivalent annual CO2 reduction of mature trees. The station itself has environmentally friendly features including a canopy designed to conserve water and reduce storm runoff by collecting rainwater in a cistern. The cistern provides a water source for foliage, while irrigating the feedstock planters via an underground pipe. The roof collection system and cistern reduce dependence on the city’s water supply. In addition, the station’s canopy was constructed utilizing aluminum composite derived from 95 percent recycled materials. The canopy is equipped with energy conserving LED lights with photocells that provide illumination only as needed
The Fuel Point also features planter boxes, constructed out of recycled material, that grow crops such as canola, camelina, soy and sunflower – the plants used to create the fuel Propel sells at the location. Propel, based in Seattle, Washington, builds, owns and operates a network of six Clean Fuel Points – stand-alone, self-serve filling stations. (6/27/08)
