May 8, 2008 – Vol.13 No.7 ZF Inaugurates First Volume Production of Hybrid Modules in Europe. During the fourth quarter of 2008, ZF will launch volume production to supply the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Beyond the Mercedes order there are eight volume production projects under development for four vehicle manufacturers, with production launches scheduled between 2008 and 2012. The hybrid modules will be available for cars, buses, delivery vehicles. Initial annual production will be 35,000 units, but production could reach up to 200,000 units per year. "We are convinced that hybrid technology will gain ground in the years to come because it not only protects the environment but also pays off for the motorists," said ZF CEO Hans-Georg H”rter at the inauguration ceremony. In 2008 alone, ZF will invest more than $89 million in the development of hybrid technology.” The modules, called DynaStart, will be built by ZF Sachs – the Powertrain and Suspension Components Division of ZF. DynaStart was developed specifically for the integration into the driveline and is ideally suited for parallel hybrid drives. This concept allows for up to 30 percent fuel savings and emission reductions, depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with a mild hybrid or a full hybrid system.
Depending on the application and customer requirements, ZF can produce hybrid modules, with capacities between 10 and 100 kW (13 -134 hp) and a maximum torque of 100 to 1000 Nm (74 - 738 ft/lbs) ZF, of Friedrichshafen, Germany, is a leading worldwide supplier of driveline and chassis technology. ZF, best known for its transmissions, is among the 15 largest automotive suppliers in the world. (5/8/08)
