April 14, 2008 – Vol.13 No.4 Wind Capital Group: Rock Port, Missouri Becomes America’s First Fully Wind-Powered Community. The 5-megawatt Loess Hills Wind Farm, in Rock Port and connected to the city power grid, produces up to 16 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, which exceeds the 13 million kilowatt hours Rock Port uses each year, making the city the first in America capable of meeting its entire annual electricity demand from wind energy. Electricity generated from Loess Hills not used by homes and businesses in Rock Port will be purchased by the Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) for use in other communities across Missouri. As part of this arrangement, MJMEUC will supply Rock Port’s power needs when the wind turbines are not generating at capacity. Loess Hills, with four Suzlon 1.25 MW turbines, is built on agricultural lands within the city limits of Rock Port. To celebrate being America’s first wind-powered community, Rock Port will host a “Green Switch” Celebration Friday, April 18.
“This is a great development for the city of Rock Port and for all of America,” said Tom Carnahan, president of Wind Capital Group, the developer of Loess Hills. “By generating enough clean, renewable electricity to meet all of Rock Port’s energy needs while also generating additional revenue for their tax base, the Loess Hills facility is a shining example of the benefits of wind energy development.” Wind Capital Group, of St. Louis, Missouri, has also developed other projects in the state: the 56.7 MW Bluegrass Ridge project in Gentry County; the 50.4 MW Cow Branch Wind Energy Center in Atchison County; and the 50 MW Conception Wind Farm in Southwest Nodaway County. The company is working on development of future projects totaling more than 1400 MW in ten states. (4/14/08)
