April 1, 2008 – Vol.13 No.2 EDF Energies Nouvelles Signs Strategic Partnership and Supply Agreement with Nanosolar. The EDF Group, through its EDF Energies Nouvelles RÈparties (ENR) subsidiary, has invested $50 million ( EUR 31 million) in equity financing in Nanosolar to further accelerate the company’s production ramp-up. Silicon Valley based Nanosolar uses innovative technology to manufacture thin-film photovoltaic cells of Copper-Indium-Gallium-Selenide (CIGS) using a printing deposition process. Nanosolar expects to have the world’s lowest-cost solar panel to become the first solar manufacturer capable of profitably selling solar panels at as little as $.99/Watt In parallel with the investment, EDF and Nanosolar signed a master supply agreement where EDF Energies Nouvelles will gain access from 2009 onwards to part of Nanosolar’s production of solar panels.
Nanosolar, of San Jose, California, is currently building the building the world's largest solar cell factory in California and the world's largest panel-assembly factory in Germany. EDF ENR, of Paris, France, has positioned itself in the market for distributed renewable energies, i.e. generated at the point of consumption (solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, heat pumps, wood-fired heating).
