March 11, 2008 – Vol. 12 No. 51 Nordic Windpower to Open Turbine Manufacturing Facility in Idaho. The Swedish manufacturer of innovative two-bladed utility-scale wind turbines plans to create more than 160 new technical, engineering, and administrative jobs at a new Pocatello, Idaho facility. Additional positions are planned at the company's operational centers in California and the UK. Volume production is expected to commence in the third quarter of the year with the first turbine delivery in November 2008. The company expects the production of at least 20 turbines monthly by September 2009. The two-bladed design has a 10-year record of trouble free-operation. Less maintenance, fewer blades, less complex gearing and easier transport and installation lead to more economic wind generation than three bladed designs. At 1.0 and 1.2 megawatts the turbines are aimed at utility scale as well as community wind projects.
As a result of Idaho's assistance, Nordic has several options for expansion, up to four times the size of its leased 42,786 square-foot facility. Nordic Windpower's turbines are based on a 30-year, $75 million investment in research and development by the Swedish government. (3/10/08)
