Exopack To Supply Key Component For Revolutionary New Battery For All Electric Car.

The company has been awarded a contract to supply current collectors for new all-solid lithium polymeric metal (LPM) battery. The battery is to be used in an electric car being developed by Bollore Group, a diversified French company, and auto builder/designer Pininfarina. That partnership plans to produce and deliver 20,000 emissions-free vehicles to buyers in Europe, Japan and the U.S. by 2012.

The LPM battery, already used commercially in some telecom applications, features an all-solid cell, free of any liquids that could lead to overheating or fire. The battery cell is encased in steel to protect against external puncture. A passive system electronically monitors battery functions.

The new battery has a designed service life of more than 125,000 miles (about 200,000 kilometers). The battery’s high capacity will enable the electric car to accelerate from zero to 30 mph (50 kms/hour) in under 5 seconds. Projected top speed for the new car is about 80 mph (130 kms/hr) with a range of about 155 miles (250 km) . Full recharging will require five hours; a 5-minute recharge can power the car about 16 miles (25 kms).

In addition to automotive and telecom batteries, Exopack Advanced Coatings provides current collectors for many other battery applications, including smart credit cards, RFID, military and space applications.

Exopack, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, is an established leader in the development, manufacture and sourcing of plastic flexible solutions and coatings for various consumer and industrial end-use markets.(2/14/08)
