February 13, 2008 – Vol. 12 No. 47 UQM Technologies Receives Generator Order from Traction Technology Plc. The generators will be incorporated into hybrid electric power packs for use in city buses in the United Kingdom. The generators will be coupled directly to a diesel engine. The order, of unspecified size, includes UQM (R) PowerPhase (tm) 100 (100 kilowatt) and UQM (R) PowerPhase (tm) 150 (150 kilowatt) generators to offer Traction Technology customers maximum choice. Traction Technology also has plans to introduce the UQM (R) PowerPhase (tm)150 as a propulsion system option later this year. The Traction Technology hybrid electric power pack is expected to enable a city bus to meet the upcoming Euro V Diesel Emissions Standards while at the same time improving vehicle performance. Working in conjunction with Transport for London operator Epsom Coaches, Merseytravel and Ipswich Buses Limited, Traction Technology plans to develop the hybrid power packs to meet the Low Emission Zone requirements set forth by the 2010 EU air quality objectives.
Traction Technology, of Horsham, West Sussex, United Kingdom, designs and manufactures hybrid power packs for the transport industry to replace the standard diesel engine and transmission system while improving fuel consumption and emissions. The company specialises in series hybrids where there is no mechanical connection between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor drive. Series hybrid power packs are particularly suited to vehicles running on inner city routes where there are many stop/start cycles. Traction Technology is concentrating on medium size vehicles, such as buses, where the weight of the power pack is not a large proportion of the vehicle weight and payload. UQM Technologies, Inc., of Frederick, Colorado, is a developer and manufacturer of power dense, high efficiency electric motors, generators and power electronic controllers for the automotive, aerospace, medical, military and industrial markets.
