February 12, 2008 – Vol. 12 No. 47 Holiday Shores Condotel – Mississippi Riverfront Development Combines Green Construction, Renewable Energy and Solar Powered Boats. The 64-unit project planned for the historic River city of McGregor, Iowa is within a 4 hour drive of Chicago, Illinois; Minneapolis, Minnesota; as well we Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin. As planned The project will include geothermal heating, solar electric power and the use of solar-powered boats available for cruising the Mississippi River. The developer is working with Australian solar powered boat designer, Solar Sailor LLC, to develop solar/biodiesel hybrid powered catamaran houseboats for use at the resort. It is planned that the solar powered boats will be available to condo owners as part of a timeshare program and will be available for sale to the general public. Plans also include having a solar hybrid boat to provide tours into the national park – the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge; 240,000 acres and 260 river miles of protected wooded islands, marshes and backwaters. The solar hybrid boats when not in use will be docked at the adjacent marina and generate electricity by solar cells and on-board wind turbines for use by the condos. Use of the solar powered boats for recreation and to generate electricity for use in the condos makes this a unique project.
Time share program partners will have the option of being part of the Holiday Shores’ Southern Horizons program in which the houseboats will motor south down the Mississippi River every fall stopping along the way at Riverfront cities such as Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans, Louisiana. It is expected that the boats will use only solar power traveling down the Mississippi. The boats will exit the Mississippi River at the Gulf of Mexico and employing Solar Sailor’s patented solar wing technology use both wind and solar power to travel along the coast to wintering destinations as far south as Mexico and Central America. In the spring, the boats will return to McGregor for the summer and fall. The developer is now taking reservations for condo units.
