February 1, 2008 – Vol. 12 No. 45 Wal-Mart Stores / BP Solar: 591.6 Kilowatt Solar Power System Completed. The pilot project at a Sam’s Club store in Palm Desert, California marks a major step toward Wal-Mart’s goal of being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy. The companies also completed plans for a 605.88 kW solar system at the Wal-Mart store in Palm Springs. The Palm Desert 591.6 kW solar power system can power for the equivalent of 134 average American homes. It’s one acre - the size of a football field - of solar modules installed on 3.5 acres of roof space. Palm Springs 605.88 kW solar power system, when complete, could provide electricity for 141 average American homes. At both stores the systems will provide up to 30 percent of the power required for daily operations.
These two stores are part of Wal-Mart’s major purchase of solar power from BP Solar and other solar power providers for approximately 22 Wal-Mart stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers in Hawaii and California. The stores included in the project are expected to achieve immediate savings over their current utility rates upon day one of operation. During 2007, BP Solar won a bid to develop 4.3 megawatts of solar energy systems for seven Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs in California. Under the agreement, Wal-Mart will purchase all of the energy produced by the solar power systems and BP Solar will operate and maintain the systems. Wal-Mart will benefit from receiving all of the renewable energy credits associated with the energy output of the systems. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates Wal-Mart discount stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Club locations in the United States. The Company operates in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. BP Solar is a key business within BP Alternative Energy and a global company with over 2200 employees focused on harnessing the sun’s energy to produce solar electricity. (1/31/08)
