December 21, 2007 – Vol. 12 No.39 HelioVolt To Open Thin Film Solar Factory in Austin, Texas. The company’s first manufacturing facility will begin production in 2008. The factory will have an initial production capacity of 20 megawatts (MW) per year with the ability to expand as the company increases production in the U.S. and abroad. It will produce copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film solar products utilizing HelioVolt’s proprietary FASST (tm) manufacturing process. The FASST (tm) process, based on rapid semiconductor printing, is a low-cost, flexible manufacturing process for CIGS synthesis. It was invented by HelioVolt founder Dr. Billy J. Stanbery.
Construction of the facility will be financed by the company’s Series B funding round, which recently closed at $101 million making it the largest solar technology venture capital round to date. HelioVolt Corporation was founded in 2001 in order to develop and market new technology for applying thin film photovoltaic coatings to a variety of substrates including conventional construction materials.
