December 9, 2007 – Vol. 12 No.38 SCHOTT Solar: New Surface Texture On Solar Cells Increases Performance. Called ISO Texture the new technology allows SCHOTT to manufacture solar cells with the same output using less silicon. Further, the new surface structure improves the appearance of the modules. The dark blue texture gives a uniform look, which will become unique to SCHOTT Solar modules. A uniform appearance should also aid architects in designing building-integrated solar systems. With the new surface structure the photovoltaic cells can convert more of the sunlight into energy, achieving greater power density. With ISO Texture the output of its solar modules increases by 0.3% to 0.5%, while using 5% less silicon per watt energy produced per cell. (While a seemingly small increase in power output and small decrease in silicon, over the life of the cell cumulative power can add up and any decrease in silicon can reduce costs that can be banked or passed on to the end user.) The ISO Texture process reduces the reflection of light particles onto the cell surface, and also expands the surface area of the cell through the small hills and valleys in the texture. Those small hills and valleys also capture more sunlight making an angular impact on the cell thus converting even more sunlight into electricity.
This new technology, developed by SCHOTT Solar in its own research centers, with the aid of research institutes and German industry, has been integrated SCHOTT’s existing manufacturing process. Initially, the company’s ASE-165 GTFT/MCI series of modules will be delivered with ISO Texture. The technology will then be extended to all product ranges and production facilities. (12/6/07)
