January 18, 2012 – Vol.16 No.44 LED North America Completes First Large-Scale Commercial Light Project Using Technology Developed at ORNL. LED North America has completed its first large-scale commercial lighting project using graphite foam technology licensed exclusively by LED North America from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Outpost Solar’s 40,000-square-foot facility located in Pulaski, Tennessee is illuminated by 180 LED North America high bay luminaries with a life span double that of a typical LED. The project was made possible with an Innovation Grant from the Tennessee Solar Institute. Wilson Stevenson, president of Outpost Solar, said, “We are very pleased with the light quality of our new building. We believe we are the first commercial industrial building in the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) footprint to be completely illuminated using LED lighting.” According to LED North America, the lighting operates at cooler temperatures, has a longer life compared to other lighting and has a higher light output with lower energy usage. It is estimated the interior high-bay LEDs will save Outpost Solar an estimated $4,000 in its annual energy cost. Outpost also decided to use LED lighting to illuminate the office area as well. Each LED tube consumes only 18 watts and reduces energy consumption by over 55% in comparison to traditional fluorescent lighting, which typically lasts one to two years. It also eliminates maintenance expense. Whenever a fluorescent tube fixture goes out, maintenance has to discern whether it is a tube failure or a ballast failure. If an LED tube does out, maintenance simply swaps out the tube. Outpost Solar’s exterior also uses LEDs for illumination. The exterior, security and parking lot are illuminated by fourteen LED cobra head streetlights that employ the graphite foam for thermal management. The LED cobra head lighting will eliminate maintenance expense and avoid more than $20,000 of electricity costs over their life.
LED North America has developed a financing model for its lights that allows customers to retrofit and install the lights with little to no upfront cost. Customers will be able to pay over time with the monies saved from lower energy expenditures. LED North America is located in Oak Ridge, Tennesee in an incubator facility r the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Its mission is to deliver technologically advanced LED lighting solutions at an attractive “return-on-investment price point”; concentrating on commercial lighting applications for roadways, parking lots, parking garages, and indoor high bay applications. Outpost Solar, located in Pulaski,Tennesee, designs and manufactures innovative solar energy systems. The Tennessee Solar Institute is part of the Volunteer State Solar Initiative, a comprehensive solar energy and economic development program that was established using $62.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding received by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.(1/17/12) Links: LED North America Outpost Solar Tennessee Solar Institute
