E. ON Completes Wind Farm at Former Coal Mine.

E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R) North America officially announced the completion of its Stony Creek wind farm. The project consists of 35 General Electric wind turbines that will provide 52.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The wind farm’s output can provide enough power to supply nearly 16,000 homes.

Stony Creek is EC&R’s first wind farm in Western Pennsylvania and was constructed on a reclaimed surface mine, which due to the irregular and sometimes unpredictable soil quality, required sophisticated engineering for the wind turbine foundations. This additional investment allows EC&R to harness the inexhaustible wind over land that once produced coal. It is located in Central City, Pa. along Lincoln Highway in Somerset County.

Stony Creek is the fifth project of EC&R completed in 2009. EC&R North America also recently completed the fourth and final phase of the world’s largest wind farm in Roscoe, Texas. The wind farm touts 627 wind turbines and a total capacity of 781.5 MW. EC&R currently has an installed capacity of 1,667.5 MW in the United States.

E.ON Climate & Renewables will be investing nearly $12 billion in renewable energy and environmental protection projects from 2007 - 2011 to expand the share of renewable energy in E.ON’s portfolio. (11/19/09)
