January 13, 2008 – Vol. 12 No. 43 SCHOTT Ships First Solar Modules from New Factory. The first palettes of thin-film modules have been shipped from its Jena, Germany facility. Construction began for the new EUR 75 million ($110 million) facility in September 2006. The facility is geared to produce 33 megawatts in solar capacity each year of the new encapsulated SCHOTT ASI 86 thin film module. The lightweight, 19 kilogram (42 lb), ASI 86 has an output of 86 Watts with an energy pay back time of less than two years. "The production quantities for 2008 are almost all sold already" says Michael Schmidt, Sales Manager at SCHOTT Solar.
Due to its dimensions, 1308 mm x 1108 mm, the SCHOTT ASI 86 is particularly well suited for large roofs and open spaces such as can be found in agriculture, according to the company. SCHOTT Solar is a leading manufacturer of wafers, cells and modules for photovoltaic generation of energy. SCHOTT also makes receivers for solar thermal power generation. The company, headquartered in Alzenau in Bavaria, Germany, employs a staff of around 900 worldwide. (1/7/08)
