October 16, 2009 – Vol.14 No.30 E.ON Climate & Renewables Completes 180 MW Papalote Creek Wind Farm. E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R) North America has officially announced the completion of its Papalote Creek wind farm, located in Taft, Texas. The Papalote Creek complex is located 30 miles north of Corpus Christi in San Patricio County and is EC&R’s first wind farm in South Texas. The wind farm consists of 109 turbines that provide 179.85 megawatts (MW) of power-- enough energy to power nearly 54,000 homes. “Papalote Creek is a model coastal project,” said Steve Trenholm, CEO, EC&R North America. “The community has rallied around this wind farm and we are proud to be a part of the community. We look forward to bringing this and other green energy to South Texas. We are excited that Papalote Creek will help prevent the release of more then 324,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and save a quarter of a billion gallons of fresh water every year compared with a conventional steam-driven fossil fuel plant.” In 2008, E.ON Climate & Renewables signed a 15-year power purchase agreement for the majority of the output from the wind farm with CPS Energy of San Antonio. Under the agreement, 115.5 MW of electricity and associated renewable energy credits will be purchased by CPS Energy. Construction on the Papalote Creek wind farm began in April of 2008 and is EC&R’s first U.S. project using Vestas V82 1.65 MW wind turbines. The project was built by Mortenson Construction. This month, EC&R North America also completed the fourth and final phase of the world’s largest wind farm in Roscoe, Texas. The wind farm touts 627 wind turbines and a total capacity of 781.5 MW.
EC&R currently has an installed capacity of 1,667.5 MW in the United States, including: --- Roscoe, 781.5 MW Roscoe, Texas E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R) is responsible for the E.ON group’s renewable energy and environmental protection activities around the world. (10/15/09)
