October 29, 2007 – Vol.12 No.32 SMUD Solar Array Provides Power for Hydrogen or the Grid. The new 80 kilowatt new solar array on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) campus in Sacramento, California will soon provide enough electricity to generate hydrogen for SMUD’s small fleet of fuel-cell electric vehicles as well as provide clean electricity to the grid during peak power demand periods. According to SMUD, enough power should be generated by the solar array to energize 40 homes or to power an electrolyzer at the station to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen to supply hydrogen for up to 14 fuel cell vehicles. The solar array is complete and suppling power to the grid. The hydrogen generation station will be complete by the end of the year. The solar powered hydrogen generation facility will fuel seven fuel cell vehicles SMUD is evaluating in a demonstration program operating in partnership with BP, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler. The new solar array, which will provide shade to a parking lot, was built at the site of a demolished building and replaces an older array built in the 1990’s to charge electric cars. SMUD is still testing electric vehicles, a 100 mpg plug-in hybrid and operates a number of conventional hybrids in its fleet alongside several flex-fuel vehicles.
