Support.com Introduces Free “Green Computer” Service to Help Consumers Save Energy and Money with their Computers.

A survey commissioned by the company revealed that 90 percent of consumers fail to realize that their personal computer is a source of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the company, an efficiently running computer can save even more energy, Support.com, as part of the Green Computer campaign, is offering a discount on its System TuneUp service to all consumers who use the Green Computer service. System TuneUp is a downloaded software application that scans a PC system and reports back on a set of recommended optimizations. (The discount offer is available through the end of 2007.)

The energy and emission savings from using computer power management functions are significant.

"Setting the power management functions is a simple way for consumers to save energy and reduce carbon emissions by automatically placing your computer into a low power sleep mode.” said Steve Ryan of the US EPA’s ENERGY STAR program “By setting these features on the monitor and computer, an individual can save $25 to $75 in energy costs and prevent 400 to 1200 pounds of CO2 emissions.”

“Enabling the power management functions on 100,000 computers and monitors would result in savings of more than 11 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year. This is equivalent to the emissions released by burning 13,000 barrels of oil or of 5,000 cars driving from Los Angeles to New York. The emissions saved in this example equate to as much as planting 1,000 acres of trees,” said Steve Offutt, chief operating officer for Carbonfund.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects globally.

Support.com’s free Green Computer service is aimed at helping consumers set the power management functions on their computer that when enabled, places the monitor, hard drives and computer into a low-power “sleep” mode after a designated period of inactivity. The Green Computer service also offers tips on cutting computer system energy consumption.

The survey of 1000 computer users in the US also revealed that:

--- 87% of respondents said that they were aware of the power management functions on their computer, but the majority (57 %) have not activated them

--- Americans are wasting energy by leaving their home computer on for an average of six hours a day when they are not using it and when it is not in sleep mode. Moreover, more than half (53%) of Americans almost never turn their computer off or only turn it off when they go to bed at night.

--- 97% of Americans agree that we are living in an age where every individual has to take responsibility for conserving energy and helping the environment as much as possible.

--- One of the main reasons that consumers aren’t utilizing the power saving functions on their computer is because they don’t know how to set them, or are afraid they will do it wrong.

SupportSoft, the company behind Support.com, is a provider of software and services for technology problem resolution. (10/24/07)
