Clipper Windpower to Develop 7.5 Megawatt Offshore Wind Turbine.

Code-named the “Britannia Project,” the turbine will meet the growing demand for highly reliable and efficient offshore wind energy. Clipper will enlist the services and test facilities of the Blyth, Northumberland-based New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) in the UK. For this project Clipper has established the Centre of Excellence for Offshore Wind with support from the One NorthEast Regional Development Agency.

One NorthEast operates five centres of excellence including NaREC.

The development of the Britannia wind turbine will build upon the advanced architecture and technology of Clipper's Liberty 2.5 MW turbine which features Clipper’s patented Quantum Drive (tm) distributed powertrain that includes four patented permanent magnet generators as well as variable speed technology. The generators can be removed and replaced with the aid of an on-board crane.

In September 2007, the 2.5 MW turbine was recognized for its unparalleled levels of efficiency, reliability and reduced cost of energy by way of a commendation awarded to the company by the US Department of Energy (DOE).

NaREC will provide the Britannia Project with a support package for engineering and a test laboratory, including its world-class wind turbine blade testing facilities. Engineering for the project will be shared between Clipper's Advanced Technology Group, based in Carpinteria, California, and Clipper operations in Blyth. Funding provided by One NorthEast will also support the development of Clipper's turbine supply chain and related manufacturing facilities.

Clipper Windpower, of Carpinteria, California, is engaged in wind energy technology, turbine manufacturing, and wind project development. (10/8/07)
