VYCON Receives CARB Approval on Flywheel Technology for Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes at California Ports.

California Air Resources Board verification means that Port operators will be able to install the VYCON REGEN System and receive emission reduction credit without further source testing. In California, the REGEN Energy Efficiency and Recycling System System is currently installed at the Long Beach Container Terminal and the ITS terminal in the Port of Long Beach, and at the STS/Evergreen Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles. Additionally, REGEN is installed on RTG cranes at ports in China and Korea.

CARB has verified that the system will reduce diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions by 25-50 percent while meeting the January 2009 NO2 limit. In addition, the VYCON REGEN system also reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOX) by 30 percent and CO2 by 25 percent.

The REGEN System can be retrofitted onto operating cranes or installed at the factory as part of a new crane. The system captures energy in its flywheel as cargo containers are being lowered. Stored energy is then ready for use with the next lift.

CARB created testing criteria that would accurately measure the emissions reduction and fuel savings provided by this new application of flywheel technology. (10/5/07)
