United Natural Foods Unveils Its New One-Megawatt Solar System.

The nearly four acre solar system is atop a company distribution facility in Rocklin, California. The development and installation was managed by American Capital Energy. The 7000 panel array is expected to generate nearly 1.5 million kilowatt hours per year, enough power for more than 140 homes.

The project’s emission reduction impacts will be the equivalent of removing 63 cars from the road, or eliminating 460 tons of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

United Natural Foods received a $2.1 million rebate from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E),which it earned through the California Solar Initiative, to defray the cost of the solar system. United now owns the solar system.

United Natural Foods is the primary supplier to the largest natural and organic retailer in the US: Whole Foods Market. United is one of the country’s largest distributors of natural and organic foods.

American Capital Energy, of North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, is an end-to-end integrator of customized, commercial solar power systems. The company received the contract in June of this year from United Natural Foods to manage the installation of the system.

PG&E’s self-generation incentive program is primarily designed for business-sized systems, which help to meet some, or all, of a facility’s power needs. PG&E also administers the California Solar Initiative (CSI) solar rebates for business, government, nonprofit and existing residential customers served by PG&E. The utility has more than 18,000 solar customers – more than any other utility in the nation – who generate approximately 153 megawatts of solar electricity, or more than 60 percent of the solar energy generated in California.
