Wal-Mart / BP Solar: First Solar Power System Installed.

Wal-Mart’s Santa Ana, California store is first to receive a solar power system under an agreement signed earlier this year with BP Solar. The 623.7 kilowatt solar system is part of a major purchase of solar power from BP Solar and other solar power providers for approximately 22 Wal-Mart stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers in Hawaii and California.

With the solar system installed savings over current utility rates are expected immediately: on the first day of operation. The solar system can provide up to 30 percent of the power for the store on which it is installed. Greenhouse gases are expected to be reduced by 8,000-10,000 metric tons per year.

Early in 2007, BP Solar won a bid to develop 4.3 megawatts of solar energy systems for seven Wal-Mart Stores in California.  Under the agreement, BP Solar will sell all of the energy produced by the solar modules to Wal-Mart as well as operate and maintain the systems. The upfront capital investment is made by BP Solar. Wal-Mart will benefit from receiving all of the renewable energy credits associated with the energy output of the systems.

The Santa Ana store installation is the pilot project under the BP Solar / Wal-Mart agreement.(10/3/07)
