September 25, 2007 – Vol. 12 No.27 Acumentrics Installs 5kW Fuel Cell Power System in National Park. The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio will run on natural gas. The system will provide heat, hot water and electricity to the Park’s environmental education center. It is the second installed in the Park by Acumentrics. The remote power system will allow the center to operate independent from the power grid. Acumentrics tubular ceramics-based fuel cell technology can run on a variety of hydrocarbon fuels as well as hydrogen. Acumentrics' fuel cell technology has exceeded performance standards in US Department of Energy Solid-State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) Phase I tests, demonstrated the ability to operate for 1300-hours on synthetic JP-8 fuel, become the first biogas-fueled SOFC system in an installation at the innovative GlashusEtt environmental information center in Stockholm, and received a 2007 New England Innovation Award from the Smaller Business Alliance of New England. The Acumentrics system at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is sponsored by the US Department of Defense, the National Park Service, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and First Energy, the local electric utility in the Cuyahoga area.
