Siemens to Supply Turbines for 500 MW UK Offshore Wind Project.

Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Ltd. will purchase 140, 3.6 megawatt turbines for installation off the UK coast begining in 2009. The reservation aggeement is the largest ever for offshore wind turbines.

The Greater Gabbard Offshore wind farm will be located 25km (15.5 miles) off the coast of Suffolk in the Outer Thames Estuary. It will be the first UK offshore wind farm to be built outside territorial waters. The wind turbines will be planted around the Inner Gabbard and the Galloper sandbanks. The project will provide renewable electricity for more than 415,000 average UK homes.

The reservation agreement came at a time of a global supply shortage of wind turbines.

The project will meet 5 percent of a UK target to generate 10 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2010 and will equal an annual offset of more than 1,000,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Ltd. (GGOWL) is a partnership between Airtricity and Fluor. (9/20/07)
