Puget Sound Energy (PSE) Buys 50 MW of Wind Power from PPM Energy.

Under a contract signed with PPM Energy, PSE is acquiring 50 megawatts (MW) of power output from the Klondike III Wind Project being built in north-central Oregon, near Wasco.

The Klondike agreement, together with the 380-MW output of PSE’s own Hopkins Ridge and Wild Horse wind farms, moves the utiluty toward renewable-energy goals of meeting 10 percent of its customers’ power needs by 2013 with renewable resources.

With the additional wind power obtained under the Klondike III contract, PSE will have more than 5 percent of its power supply – approximately 430 MW – coming from renewable resources. By 2020, the utility intends to have about 1,400 MW of renewable power in its portfolio.

Washington voters last fall approved a new law requiring the state’s largest utilities to secure 15 percent of their power supply from renewable sources by 2020.

Puget Sound Energy serves more than 1 million electric customers and 718,000 natural gas customers in Washington state. (7/19/07)
