G8, NOT GREAT.

The 31st G-series meeting at the posh Gleneagles(tm) hotel in Scotland (overshadowed by the bombings in London) went the way of most G-meetings: talk, photo ops and presumably golf on some really first rate links.

Global warming was on this year’s agenda and that ended with a call for more talk - or rather a call for a new dialogue.

The G8 leaders agreed that climate change is a serious long term challenge brought on in large part by human activities.

They also agreed that more action should be taken not to just stop the growth of greenhouse gases, but reverse that growth. The action they mean would be stronger than the Kyoto Protocol.

George Bush still won’t budge, of course. The U.S. won’t be involved in international agreements to cut greenhouse gases unless there’s a technical means to do so without damaging the U.S. economy. He sticks behind a hydrogen economy and other technologies, but those are in the future.

G8: Talk on global warming, agreement for more talk, but no action, that’s the summary.
