LOOKING FOR TROUBLE.

The date: September 28, 2005. The headline: Driver Runs Out Of Gas in Front of Gas Station.

In the story, driver John Doe is quoted as saying, “ I just picked up this new Ford a week ago. I pulled into an Exxon station to fill up and looked at the gas cap. It says Ford Recommends BP so I went looking for a BP station. I couldn’t find one. So here I am out of gas in front of this Shell station.”

Ford has announced it will recommend BP products on all 2006 Ford branded cars, trucks and SUVs sold in the U.S. Cars coming off the assembly line beginning in July will have Ford Recommends BP along with the BP helios logo emblazoned on the gas cap.

Expect consumer groups as well as competing gasoline distributors to squawk. Isn’t Ford in enough trouble already? Why go looking for more?

There’s no particular reason for the recommendation other than a joint marketing effort. Visit Ford at http://www.ford.com/ .
