WORLD WIND WATCH.
Gamesa has been given the go-ahead to build a 200-megawatt wind farm in Mexico. But while Mexico will get the clean electricity, Spain will get the carbon credits.
The wind farm to be built in Oaxaca in 2006 will be known as Bii Nee Stipa or Wind That Brings Energy.
Spain will receive carbon credits from the project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol. CDM allows Kyoto-complying nations to receive greenhouse gas emission reduction credits from projects built in developing countries such as Mexico.
Gamesa is also planning wind farms in Brazil and the Dominican Republic that will also be eligible for carbon credits credited to Spain. Visit Gamesa at http://www.gamesa.es/ .
For projects offshore and onshore Vestas has new turbine orders.
The company will be supplying 36, V-90 3.0 megawatt turbines for a new offshore wind farm off the Dutch coast at Egmond aan Zee. The order was placed by Noordzeewind, the joint venture of Shell and power company Nuon.
Construction of the 108-megawatt wind farm will begin late in 2005 with completion expected about a year later.
Vestas will also be supplying 17 turbines to Spanish electric utility Iberdrola for four wind farms to be built in France. The order includes 15, 2.0 megawatt turbines and 2, 850-kilowatt machines. Visit Vestas at http://www.vestas.com/ .
FPL Energy, which owns about 40 percent of the wind generation capacity in the U.S. may build a 50-megawatt wind farm near Center, North Dakota. All of the power will be sold to Minnesota Power.
The word MAY is used above because the project will rely on an extension of the production tax credit (PTC) for wind energy that is set to expire at midnight December 31, 2005. It’s too late this year for the project to be completed by year's end even if other permitting was ready.
Minnesota Power has also announced it will build another wind project in the region and is reviewing proposals. Visit Minnesota Power at http://www.mnpower.com/ , FPL at http://www.fplenergy.com/
