ELECTRIC TRAIN SETS.
As toy train hobbyists know electric powered locomotives can be driven through through towns, around rolling landscapes, into switching yards and stations with precise remote control. While toy electric trains operate in a fantasy world, there’s no reason why full-size electrically-powered trains can’t operate by remote control in the real world.
RailPower Technologies has announced it will deliver four Green Goat GG20B cabless hybrid switching locomotives to BNSF Railway Company for use in Texas. The hybrid locomotives, which use a small diesel generator on-board to keep 300 batteries charged, can be operated on-board or by remote control, thus no need for an engineer’s cab. (Cabless as the company says.)
The Green Goat hybrid switching locomotives reduce oxide of nitrogen emissions (NOx) and particulate emissions by 80-90 percent over comparable diesel switching locomotives. Fuel efficiency is improved, thus greenhouse gas emissions are cut by 40 -70 percent.
