WORLD WIND WATCH.

Expect wind power to have a slow year in the U.S, compared with a few years ago. Blame a less than robust economy and disinterest in tackling climate change and air pollution. Still, there’s an occasional project.

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has announced that it has begun construction of the 150-megawatt Hopkins Ridge Wind Project in Washington state. The $200 million project will sport more than 80 Vestas 1.8 megawatt turbines and be situated on more than 11,000 acres of open wheat field near Dayton, Washington. Each turbine should take up less than a acre, however. Land near the turbines can still be harvested.

Portions of Hopkins Ridge should be operating late in 2005 or early 06. RES America Construction is a key contractor for the wind farm. Visit Puget Sound Energy at http://www.pse.com/ .
