WORLD WIND WATCH.

Melancthon Grey, what a great name. What a great name for a 67.5 megawatt wind farm to be built in Ontario, Canada.

GE Energy has announced it will be supplying 45, 1.5 megawatt turbines for the project that will be built near Shelburne, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Toronto by Canadian Hydro Developers.

The project will be eligible for a CAD $10 ($8) payment per megawatt hour of wind energy produced under the Canadian Government’s Wind Power Production Incentive (WPPI). The WPPI, a direct payment for wind energy generated, is being offered to subsidize the construction of up to 4000 megawatts of wind energy in the country.

According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, the WPPI could help attract more than CAD $6 billion ($4.9 billion) in wind power investment and see 4500 - 5000 megawatts of new wind capacity installed by 2012. As of September 2004 the windy, but sparsely populated nation, had only 439 megawatts installed.

Construction for Melancthon Grey is expected to begin this spring and be completed in a year. Visit GE Energy (wind) at http://www.gewind.com/ .

More great names for wind power projects: La Manga, Rio Almodovar, El Ruedo, El gallego and Cortijo de Iruelas, all under construction in the Tarifa province of Spain, will add 78.4 megawatts of wind capacity to power producer Endesa’s portfolio.

The projects together will have 98 turbines, 42 Made AE-56 800 kilowatt wind conversion devices and 56 Made AE-59 models of the same capacity. The projects required an investment of EUR 75 million ($97.7 million).

Endesa has a long range plan to build 2100 megawatts of new renewable capacity (wind and other resources) in five years. Visit Endesa at http://www.endesa.es/ .
