WORLD WIND WATCH.

Greenhouse gas emissions from a single powerplant contribute to a global problem. Air pollution from that same powerplant may affect whole regions downwind.

Even though a new wind farm might not be in your neighborhood, a new wind farm built anywhere on the planet - by some small fraction - helps your well being.

Now that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Cape Wind offshore wind farm has been completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Corps has opened a period of public comment for the project.

Until January 10 2005, the Corps wants to hear from the public by letter, e-mail and in public hearings. The opposition to the project is sure to make their position known. Those in favor have to do better. And those in favor can be from anywhere in the U.S. since the project will help the U.S. overall. (A point that they need to be reminded of.)

The Cape Wind website has a list of hearing dates and venues and includes a link where comments can be made directly to Corps. Visit Cape Wind at http://www.capewind.org/ .

Denmark’s Vestas Energy Systems has reported two separate orders for wind turbines for North America.

RES America Construction will purchase 36, V82 1.65-megawatt turbines for a 59.4 megawatt project to be built in Nebraska to be owned by Nebraska Public Service. The project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2005.

In a secretive deal, Vestas will also deliver 12, V82 1.65-megawatt turbines to an undisclosed developer building a wind project in Canada. If the first 12 turbines pass muster with the developer, Vestas will deliver another 51 turbines for the same project - at an undisclosed location.

Vestas delivered 1369 turbines in 2003 for total capacity of 1812 megawatts. Visit Vestas at http://www.vestas.com/ .
