WORLD WIND WATCH.
Amec, a UK based project management and services company, has submitted proposals for two large scale wind farms to be built in Scotland. Together - if both are built - Lewis Wind Power and Kyle Wind farm could supply more than a third of the Scotland’s residential electric power needs.
The larger of the two is Lewis which would also be the largest single onshore wind project on the planet - 702 megawatts with 234, 3.0 megawatt turbines. The Lewis project would take advantage of offshore winds on the Isle of Lewis, where the project would be built. Lewis is in the windy Western Isles.
The second project, Kyle, no less impressive, would have 100, 3.0 megawatt turbines for 300-megawatts of nameplate capacity. Kyle would be built in East Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
Both projects have completed environmental impact studies and will undergo a period of public comment. The Scottish Executive is expected to give the thumbs up or down by the middle of 2005.
Scotland has goal of 18 percent of its power generated by renewables by 2010, a whopping 40 percent by 2020. Excellent wind and wave resources will help it meet this goal. Unfortunately, Scotland may also become England’s renewable power plant. Visit Amec at http://www.amec.com/wind/ .
