HYBRIDS IN NEED.

For now state-of-the-art vehicle technology is hybrids. Now in the evolution and recognition-with-consumers stage, hybrids will be with us be for quite a while, perhaps two decades or more. (If and when we get hydrogen fuel cell vehicles they’ll be hybrids too.)

To help with the recognition phase of hybrids, as well as promote its environmentally-conscious, socially-aware image, FedEx will be using two of its new hybrid delivery vehicles for free deliveries to the needy this holiday season.

In a program known as Operation FedEx Special Delivery the company will crisscross the nation with the two specially painted hybrid delivery trucks to deliver donated items to local children’s hospitals, homeless shelters and local charitable and philanthropic organizations in at least 15 cities.

FedEx is asking everyone to get involved and donate gifts, non-perishable food or coats to the program through their local charity. And, if your city or charity isn’t on the initial schedule, let them know through the special website for the program. They appear to be looking for more stops to make.

The company says that if 10,000 hybrid electric vehicles were being operated, smog-causing emissions would be reduced by 1700 tons; the equivalent of taking all the passenger cars off the streets of New York for 25 days.

The van was developed in partnership with Environmental Defense.

The program has already begun and will run through December. Visit FedEx Special Delivery at http://www.caredeliveryvan.com/
