SOLAR PROJECTS.

Under the sunny desert sky of Nevada, the Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD) now has the go-ahead to build a 3.1 megawatt photovoltaic power plant. Primarily to power its own operations, the DSA, or Distributed Solar Array as it will be known, will actually be a number of smaller projects considered as one power plant. One of the projects will include five solar parking shades at the Las Vegas Springs Reserve.

The project will be one of the largest solar energy projects built by a public agency in the U.S. As with most of the large solar projects in the U.S., DSA will be built by PowerLight. Visit them at http://www.powerlight.com/ .

Another PowerLight Project will be a 904-kilowatt array to be built for FedEx Corporation. The project will be atop the FedEx hub at the Oakland International Airport in California.

That project, with 5769 solar panels (more than 300,000 cells) will cover 81,000 square feet of the facility’s roof and provide up to 80 percent of the peak load demand for the building.

The solar panels for the project will be supplied by Sharp with production help provided by FedEx. The company will fly Sharp solar cells from Japan, where they are made, to Sharp’s new module plant near Memphis, Tennessee. FedEx will then truck the completed modules back to California.

(FedEx is also continuing embrace greenness by adding ten hybrid electric delivery vehicles to its fleet in New York City. The FedEx Express Optifleet E700 trucks were built in collaboration with Environmental Defense, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Eaton Corporation which provided the hybrid drive train.)
