GREEN POWER BUYS.
In the U.K. telecommunications giant BT Group announced that it will purchase enough green electricity to power 6500 telephone exchanges, satellite earth stations, offices and depots: nearly all of its electric requirements. The combined purchase of green power from British Gas and Npower is the world’s largest purchase of its kind to date.
BT will buy 1.0 terrawatt hours (tWh) of renewable energy and 1.1 terrawatt hours (tWh) of electricity from combined heat and power operations in three year contracts. The move to green power is immediate. Visit BT at http://www.bt.com/ .
The State of Pennsylvania announced that it will purchase 100,000 megawatt hours per year of renewable energy, 10 percent of the state government’s electric requirements. Power will be bought from Community Energy and Strategic Energy. The purchase will double the state’s green power usage. And Horizon Organic, an organic milk processor, will join sister company White Wave, a soy milk producer, and purchase wind power credits - green tags - for all of its electricity needs.
White Wave began purchasing wind power green tags for 100-percent of its power for manufacturing and operations demand in 2003. By the end of 2004 the company will approach 25,000 megawatt hours of equivalent wind power consumed. Green tags in the amount of the power will be used to build new wind capacity.
