MORE X PRIZES TO COME.
Pilot, now astronaut, Brian Binnie flew SpaceShipOne to 70 miles (112 kilometers) above the planet to win the $10 million X-Prize for Mojave Aerospace Ventures on October 4. Certainly a milestone in flight. But that’s not the story.
The Big Story is that officials at the X Prize Foundation and the World Technology Network (WTN) plan a new series of prizes to be known as the WTN-X Prizes. Those prizes will reward cutting edge achievements in medicine, transportation, energy and nanotechnology. They are looking for specific suggestions too.
Energy and transportation inventors should take note. Though the awards won’t be announced for another six months, clearly the WTN-X team won’t be looking another way to burn fossil fuels inefficiently.
The founder of the WTN, James P. Clarke, said that the competitions will inspire individuals and companies worldwide to develop methods to achieve what have been considered Holy Grails in science and technology.
