WORLD WIND WATCH.
According to a news story from Reuters, Pakistan is gearing up to have 10 percent of its power generated from wind. That’s for the future, but shortly up to a gigawatt of wind power is being planned.
The Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) claims that one region of the country has some of the best wind resources in the world. That area, south east of Karachi on the Arabian Sea, is about 100 miles long (160 km) by 37 miles (60 km) wide. So far the government has set aside more than 12,000 acres for wind farm development.
Already, seasoned wind energy companies are lining up to build facilities there. Vestas wants to build two 100-megawatt wind farms. G.E. Wind wants to build farms with a combined capacity of 400 megawatts and Repower of Germany wants to build two 50 megawatt wind farms. Visit the AEDB at http://www.aedb.org/ .
Vestas has also announced it has won an order for 54, 1.82-megawatt turbines for a 90-megawatt wind project in Australia. Alina Wind Farm, being built by Walkaway Wind Power in Western Australia, is set to be completed by late 2005. Visit Vestas at http://www.vestas.com/.
