GREEN INDEX.

Those interested in following the market for clean, green and alternative energy stocks now have an index all their own: The WilderHill Clean Energy Index.

The index is now posted through the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) under ticker symbol: ECO.

WilderShares LLC, which developed the index, states that the new index is comprised of publicly traded companies that focus on greener and generally renewable sources of energy and technologies facilitating cleaner energy.

(Facilitating means the company’s entire product line or services, if not entirely green, is significant in part, or is a component of other green energy products and services.)

WilderShares goes on to say that the index is a modified equal weighted index comprised of companies whose businesses stand to benefit substantially from the societal transition toward the use of cleaner energy and conservation.

The index had a benchmark value of 100.00 and is rebalanced four times per year.

Currently the index includes 39 companies, among them, with their green facilitating component:

FPL Group -- utility company with significant wind energy capacity http://www.fplgroup.com/

Evergreen Solar -- photovoltaic (PV) solar cells and modules http://www.evergreensolar.com/

Energy Conversion Devices -- PV solar, batteries, hydrogen storage http://ovonic.com/ 

Quantum Fuel Systems -- propane, natural gas vehicle fuel systems http://www.qtww.com/ 

Active Power -- flywheel energy storage http://www.activepower.com/

Hydrogenics -- fuel cells http://www.hydrogenics.com/

Plug Power -- fuel cells http://www.plugpower.com/ 

Calpine -- geothermal power http://www.calpine.com/

Maxwell Technologies -- ultracapacitors for hybrid and fuel cell vehicles http://www.maxwell.com/

UQM Technologies -- vehicle electric motors and controls http://www.uqm.com/

Capstone Turbine -- microturbines http://www.microturbine.com/

Ballard Power Systems -- fuel cells and distributed generation http://www.ballard.com/
