STATE MANDATED RENEWABLES - NOW 16.
Unless Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri (R) vetoes the legislation, the Ocean State will be the 16th in the U.S. to have a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).
Under the law 15 percent of the electricity generated in the state by 2020 must come from renewables. Only 2 percent can come from existing renewable energy sources.
The other 15 states and their portfolio content are:
Arizona -- 1.1 percent by 2017
California -- 20 percent by 2017
Connecticut -- 10 percent by 2010
Iowa -- 2.6 percent by 1999
Maine -- 30 percent by 2000
Maryland -- 7.5 percent by 2014
Massachusetts -- 4 percent by 2009
New Jersey -- 6.5 percent by 2012
New Mexico -- 10 percent by 2011
New York -- 25 percent by 2013
Nevada -- 15 percent by 2013
Pennsylvania -- (varies by utility)
Texas -- 2.7 percent by 2009
Wisconsin -- 2.2 percent by 2011
