AUSTRALIAN LEADER’S GREEN BID.
Though Australian Prime Minister John Howard has opposed ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, and is openly supportive of the nation’s fossil fuel industry, he has recognized the need to include green energy technologies in the nation’s energy mix.
In a white paper offered by the Prime Ministers office - Securing Australia’s Energy Future - numerous renewable energy projects, if approved by the government, would be funded - in part.
Among proposals noted in the paper are the Solar Cities project to bring grid-connected solar homes to Sydney and Adelaide, a program to develop methods to store renewable-generated energy, funding for better long-range wind forecasting needed for planning wind farms, funding for developing super solar systems, and funding for hot dry rock geothermal energy systems.
Overall, the Prime Minister wants projects to be cost-shared with applicants to receive AUD $1 from the government for every AUD $2 invested.
