TOTAL INDEPENDENCE.

While the latest poll from Harris Interactive shows that high gas prices in the U.S. are making buyers reconsider which vehicle they will buy, real independence from gasoline is to not buy it at all.

The poll mentions a growing interest in hybrid technology. Yet because there is little hype about alternative fuels such as biodiesel, the fuel and vehicles that could run on it have yet to appear on the radar screen of the car-buying public as a way to move away from gasoline.

In the past U.S. car buyers have shunned smelly diesel fuel and the cars that run on it. But diesel technology is getting better and more diesel vehicles on the way: All should be able to run on biodiesel. Drivers, knowing that at least part of the fuel that is powering their cars comes from home-grown crops, might find the biodiesel option appealing.

Along with more diesel cars, more biodiesel production is on the way too.

Beginning in August Peach State Labs (PSL) will begin producing 60,000 gallons of biodiesel each month with a steady ramp up of production to reach 3 million gallons per month by the end of 2005.

PSL’s biodiesel, made from soybeans and other feedstocks, will be sold as neat (100 percent) biodiesel known as SOYMET for use in manufacturing boilers, and as B25 SOYMET (25 percent biodiesel, 75 percent petro diesel) that can be used in diesel cars or trucks.
