SOLAR ACTIVITY.

The City of Brockton, Massachusetts will soon be home to the largest solar power plant in New England, as well as one of the largest solar arrays in the United States.

With up to 6720 panels, the grid-connected, 500-kilowatt Brightfield solar project will be under construction on a 27-acre brownfield site in the fall of 2004.

The project is being built by the municipality with $1.04 million in grant assistance from the state’s Renewable Energy Trust managed by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC). A revenue guarantee of more than $644,000 in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (Green Tags) was also obtained from the Massachusetts Green Power Partnership.

The project is being promoted as a solar park aimed at helping revitalization efforts for Brockton’s downtown. Aside from attractive landscaping, Brightfield will include interactive displays for educational purposes. Plans are already being made to incorporate Brightfield with hands-on learning activities in solar energy for area students.
