WORLD WIND WATCH.

Busy times ahead for wind energy in the UK. By the end of 2005, more than 1000 megawatts of new capacity will be built, according to the British Wind Energy Association, that will bring the nation’s total wind output to more than 1500 megawatts. In about 2 years wind energy will provide 1.3 percent of the UK’s power needs.

In 2004, 22 new projects totaling 474 megawatts will be completed with 21 of those onshore. The remaining 560 megawatts will be online in 2005. Visit the BWEA at http://www.bwea.com/

The state of Arizona is about to get its first commercial wind farm. APS, the state’s largest utility company, has teamed with Western Wind Energy to build a 15-megawatt facility in St. Johns about 200 miles from Phoenix.

To be known as the Eastern Arizona Wind Energy Center the wind farm will have 10, 1.5 megawatt turbines perched atop a mesa that is 800 feet higher than surrounding land. Eastern will help APS meet the goals of the Arizona Corporate Commission’s Environmental Portfolio Standard which encourages APS to generate 1.1 percent of its power from renewables.

Construction for Eastern will begin in September and at least a portion of the power will be on-line by year’s end. Visit APS at http://www.aps.com/ (click News Releases) and Western Wind at http://www.westernwindenergy.com/ (click News Releases).
