THANK YOU, RUSSIA.
At the beginning of the week hearts sank as it was announced that Russia would not sign the Kyoto Protocol.
Russia was needed for the treaty to go into force.
But within days the Russian government stated that it was still considering Kyoto, and that the earlier statement was not true.
Phew. A global sigh of relief came from Kyoto supporters.
Russia, reportedly, is closely watching and studying carbon emission trading, which it would benefit from. Surely officials took note this week that, according to a report from Natsource LLC, greenhouse gas emission trading had reached 71 million tons in 2003 and that prices paid for emission trades rose to $4 - $6 per ton.
Though 71 million tons is a small fraction of the 8.3 billion tons of total carbon emissions expected by 2010, Russian analysts should note that the tonnage traded has nearly doubled from the previous year. The beginning of a trend? Visit Natsource for the report at http://www.natsource.com/ .
