WORLD WIND WATCH.

Suzlon Energy, an Indian manufacturer of utility scale wind turbines, has begun the early stages of developing what may be the largest single ONSHORE wind project in the world. To be built in the Kutch district of Gujarat, the 500-megawatt project valued at 2200 crore rupies ($485 million) will have 400, 1.25 megawatt Suzlon turbines. Full scale construction on the project will begin as soon as wind studies are complete. The project is expected to be online by 2006. Visit Suzlon at http://www.suzlon.com/ .

In what could be the world’s largest OFFSHORE wind project in the world Talisman Energy and partner Scottish and Southern Energy are considering a 1000-megawatt facility on Talisman’s Beatrice oil field off the coast of Scotland, 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Aberdeen.

The project by the Canadian company and its Scottish partner would be valued at $925 million and have up to 200 turbines. Doing some quick math, this would mean the project would utilize 5-megawatt turbines that are not yet commercially available, but expected to be soon. The world’s third largest completed wind project has been dedicated. The 204-megawatt New Mexico Wind Energy Center owned by FPL Energy is near the town of House, population 69. All of the power will be sold to the Public Service Company of New Mexico which will sell the renewable energy under the PNM Sky Blue brand name. PNM is the state’s largest utility with 385,000 rate payers. Visit FPL Energy at http://www.fplenergy.com/ and PNM at http://www.pnm.com/ .
