Meetup.com would be a good complement to the Apollo Alliance. Meetup - the underlying story behind the most recent Doonesbury comic strip series - is an Internet-based scheduling service for local meetings of national interest groups.

Applied Innovative Technologies makes a flashlight - the NightStar - powered by a linear generator that makes enough electricity stored in a capacitor to light an LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulb. According to the company shaking NightStar for 30 seconds will light the flashlight for 20 minutes.
