SOLAR PROJECTS.

A one-megawatt solar system of 9600 panels has been installed on the rooftops of eleven horse stables at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego,California. The $5 million project, 50 percent of which was paid for by that state, will reduce the Fairground’s grid-supplied electricity consumption by 22 percent. The project was built by BP Solar. On the opposite U.S. coast another one-plus megawatt solar system atop the offices of Fala Direct Marketing on Long Island, New York is now operating. Owned by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and installed through LIPA’s Clean Energy Initiative, the 13,464 solar panels, as well as the insulating effect of them, could save Fala as much as $305,000 per year - up to $12 million over the 25 years. The panels were supplied by Shell Solar, and configured by PowerLight. Visit Shell Solar at http://www.shell.com/solar , PowerLight at http://www.powerlight.com/ .

In upstate New York a 15 kilowatt solar system will be built on the roof of Catskill Art and Office Supply in Poughkeepsie. The system was funded, in part, with a cash incentive of $74,800 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through New York’s Energy $mart (SM) program. This incentive reduced the cost of the system to $50,000. Tax incentives, too, will help to further reduce the cost of the system. The system has been designed and will be installed by Global Resource Options, which helped the buildings owner maximize the NYSERDA funding.
