GREEN FRIENDLY NORTHEAST.
It’s not surprising that people of the Northeast United States find green energy appealing. In the earliest part of the nation to be developed, homes and commercial buildings often rely on oil for heating because natural gas pipelines - which could supply cheaper, cleaner energy - are scarce compared with regions developed in more recent times. The sometimes high cost of heating oil, combined with the cold winter of the area, may make people and businesses more conscious overall of energy consumption.
In a study commissioned by the Northeast ENERGY STAR lighting and appliance initiative, 85 percent of consumers surveyed in the region felt that finding ways to conserve heating oil was very important, along with 78 percent that wanted to conserve electricity and 66 percent the same for water. Overall, 92 percent thought that energy conservation and energy efficiency should play a larger role in helping reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.
And significant numbers of consumers said they are willing to embrace greener energy too. Forty percent in the five states surveyed,Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York (Long Island), Rhode Island, and Vermont would consider renewables to power their homes. Some 40 percent have at least one compact fluorescent bulb in their home and 53 percent were aware that they have ENERGY STAR rated appliances in their homes. ENERGY STAR is a U.S. government energy efficiency rating system for a wide selection of home appliances, heating and cooling equipment, lighting and office equipment .
