GREEN HYDROGEN.
Where there is a sufficient and perhaps an excess supply of renewable energy it would be possible to move rapidly towards hydrogen fuel cell vehicles now?
Iceland, which is already largely powered with renewables, will be the home of the world’s first public commercial hydrogen filling station. To open on April 24, Icelandic New Energy, as part of the ECTOS (Ecological City Transport System) project, will offer hydrogen electrolyzed from water to any customer (anyone) operating a hydrogen fueled vehicle. For now though, the only vehicles in need of hydrogen are three DaimlerChrysler fuel cell buses that will operate on the streets of Reykjavik for two years. Anyone else who happens to bring a fuel cell or combustion engined, hydrogen fueled vehicle into the country could purchase pressurized hydrogen at the filling station. Other hydrogen filling stations around the world have limited access.
Electricity for the hydrogen electrolyzer will be generated from hydropower or the geothermal sources Iceland is famous for. Visit ECTOS at http://www.newenergy.is/ .
